Starting this as a place for all of us to post project ideas. Ideas should include links to topics or projects so that others may be inspired and create them.

This looks like a cool project, and since it uses a Propeller board, I think I should make one

I think this will be my next project - uses a Propeller

This is purely my idea. And it isn't what most people are probably thinking.

I live in and drive a motorhome. Every other RV I see has at least two people in it, except for rare exceptions.

So my plan is to make a robot that has a head that a human will recognize as a head. It will probably look something like a Star Wars droid head. I'm still designing it. It's job will be to sit in the passenger seat and make faces at other people, and make snarky comments about my driving.

Further along the line this will also be a telepresence robot. I am researching the algorithms needed to navigate a room filled with people and tables, as the prime reason I'm doing this is to take a housebound friend of mine to a science fiction convention. Navigation will be partially goal-directed by the user and partially avoidance behavior from the robot. I do want it to have a manipulator so she can point out things on a dealer's table. It might even have a manipulator with a camera on it so that the user can take a better look at something.

There are no links yet because currently this is in the design stage. I have an idea on the base, but I want this to be about 5 foot tall (maximum) so that it can see over a table. I'm thinking about an Actobotics Agent 390 base (large, rectangular, and tracked), which I may have in storage. I plan on making the head an adjustable height so that I can put it into the passenger seat and have it look out the window.

I hope that this is a good idea for a new project. It will expand my knowledge and skills. To make the head I will have to design it for 3d printing. I'll need to understand ROS for the many capabilities that it has. I will need to have both facial identification and recognition. I'll need it to recognize when my driving is bad. And I'll need it to be able to be taken apart so that I can move it into and out of the motorhome.

I figure this will keep me busy for a few years. :)

Welcome to CKR Jay! Glad to see you got your dream of RV living going! I like the nagging robot passenger idea. Maybe have it track your speed and complain too fast or too slow?

Good to see you here!

Groucho will have a GPS chip, so the mapping software should be possible. If I can find the speed limit on the roads I travel then I could have Groucho help me with the directions also.

BTW, I just got the parts for Groucho's base and motor. I'm starting with an Actobotics Agent 390 kit. It's a tracked kit that is large enough for what I want to do. I also have the motor driver, an RDLIDAR, an Intel NUC, 2 Intel RealSense cameras, and two motors because Actobotics doesn't put encoders on the motors it sells with its robot kits! Plus a bunch of webcams for other vision-type things. And if I can locate the proper boxes I have enough sensors to fill out the robot.

I do need to design the head and to figure out how I'm going to put other levels on this base. It *shouldn't* be too difficult. And so far I haven't designed any manipulators for this robot. I want to put the head on a "neck" that's built like a robot arm so that the head can be locked low (for looking out the passenger seat while looking out the window) or be high and more flexible. This neck will require torquey motors because I want the head to be able to lean over and look at something on a table. Or maybe to look around corners.

Hmmm. I could design a laser-tag mode for Groucho, with the laser beams coming out of his eyes. Or is laser-tag no longer a thing?

I'll have to work on him in pieces because I have a workspace about equal to a 4-person booth in your local pizza place.

Have a good day, and once I can get a picture of the parts, I'll post him as a robot!
